Requiem to the American Worker

This article should probably be posted on Labor Day. But, with the economic situation in the world today and what I feel is, the unjust criticism of the American Worker, I am speaking out today. Just for the record, I am in my 40th year of my working career. I started in a factory when I was 16 years old. (Yeah, you could work in a factory at that age when I was younger) Through the years I supported and raised a family, educated myself and advanced to the Management Level I have achieved today. I was a member of the Teamsters Union, the Steelworkers Union and more recently was a President of a Local Warehouse and Chauffeurs Union twice elected. I have been involved with contract negotiations representing a Union and as a Management Representative for a Corporation. I am presently a Manufacturing Supervisor that, at times involves over 70 people on shift, between two buildings within our facility. This is why I feel as strongly as I do today, about the unfair blame, being placed on the American Worker for the failure of our Corporations and the economy.

Just about every Corporation in this country has a Millionaire at the helm. Some of these people may have moved up through the ranks but, more than likely, they have obtained their positions due to family status or education brought on by Social Standing, established by their parents. Many, if not all Corporate Leaders, will never have to struggle if their companies fail due to the elitist society they are a member of. However, all of these individuals and mostly all of the wealthy, of this country, would never have been able to obtain their wealth and stature if it was not for the sweat and hard work of the American Worker. Even if the wealth is gained through investments, any kind of growing economy would be nothing if, it was not for the lower and middle class of our society, providing the working backbone needed to succeed.

General Motors is ready to announce their Bankruptcy Filing. They place quite a bit of blame on the cost of labor. Forget the fact that, if GM had started investing in newer technologies as early as 10 years ago, maybe they could still build bigger vehicles that would get far superior gas mileage and would be selling today. But instead, Corporations put profits in the short term, over future gain. They would rather strip the American Worker, who they depend on, from any benefits and compensation to hide the fact of poor business decisions and practices. Our Politicians, in particular from the Republican Party, are just as culpable. The GOP has Tea Parties about taxes yet, would cut the throat of the American Worker, to satisfy their parties base which, is the wealthy and corporate elite, in this country.

Last month, I referenced the Greed is Good speech, from the 1987 Movie Wall Street, in an article about capitalism. Since then, I noticed Chris Mathews referring to it on his show, Hardball about a week ago and recently in the Manley Republic blog. The following is the speech, in its entirety, taken from an article posted on the Manley Republic;

Well, ladies and gentlemen we’re not here to indulge in fantasy but in political and economic reality. America, America has become a second-rate power. Its trade deficit and its fiscal deficit are at nightmare proportions. Now, in the days of the free market when our country was a top industrial power, there was accountability to the stockholder. The Carnegies, the Mellons, the men that built this great industrial empire, made sure of it because it was their money at stake. Today, management has no stake in the company! All together, these men sitting up here own less than three percent of the company. And where does Mr. Cromwell put his million-dollar salary? Not in Teldar stock; he owns less than one percent. You own the company. That’s right, you, the stockholder. And you are all being royally screwed over by these, these bureaucrats, with their luncheons, their hunting and fishing trips, their corporate jets and golden parachutes.
Teldar Paper has 33 different vice presidents each earning over 200 thousand dollars a year. Now, I have spent the last two months analyzing what all these guys do, and I still can’t figure it out. One thing I do know is that our paper company lost 110 million dollars last year, and I’ll bet that half of that was spent in all the paperwork going back and forth between all these vice presidents. The new law of evolution in corporate America seems to be survival of the unfittest. Well, in my book you either do it right or you get eliminated. In the last seven deals that I’ve been involved with, there were 2.5 million stockholders who have made a pretax profit of 12 billion dollars.
I am not a destroyer of companies. I am a liberator of them! The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA.
http://www.manlyrash.com/blog/greed-is-good

I have referred to this speech because I believe Hollywood was sending a message. I believe the message was that our corporations were taking their eye off the ball. It is the decisions being made at the corporate level that is destroying our economy and way of life. Not the American Worker who gives of themselves through the sweat and hard work given day after day. Now, I am not saying the American Worker is a Saint. There are your bad apples in every group. But, the overall value and pride the American Worker brings to the table, is unfairly being criticized, distorted and misrepresented.

Now, I have called out the Republican Party but, the Democrats are as much to blame. Our Politicians, from both parties, tout their champion of the American Worker, while selfishly indulging in inflated salaries with benefits that are denied to the worker that is so coveted. To cater to a World Economy, treaties to foreign countries have been made by administrations from both political parties that have proven to sacrifice and undermine the very fiber of our nation’s workforce.

To the Wealthy and Corporate America, I say stop blaming the American Worker for the woes of today’s economy and take a close look in the mirror. For there, is where, the problem truly lies. Yes, Greed is Good, providing it is not used to benefit and enrich the few, while possibly irreparably damaging the many. Every day, I work side by side with my fellow workers and proudly, use all of our skills to make the highest quality product at the most economical cost available. I defy any workforce on this planet to prove they are better. Sure, the labor is cheaper. But, compared to any product made on this planet, in the final analysis, there is nothing produced better in this world, than when it is; Made in the USA.

The Hammer

The Hammer was a nickname given to a former House Majority Leader named Tom Delay. Congressman Delay had the reputation for enforcing Republican Party discipline when votes were made on the Congressional Floor and for the retribution he reigned on anyone who dared defy him. Congressman Delay was also one of the main characters involved in forming the K Street Project. This was a group created, to influence Lobbying firms, to employ Republican philosophized personnel. In return, these firms were allowed, to assist in creating Legislation favorable to Big Business and Corporate America. This Legislation would be pushed through the House of Representatives under the watchful eye of the House Majority Leader Delay.

Unfortunately, in 2002, Congressman Delay found himself in trouble. The following website takes you to a quick synopsis of the issue; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_DeLay_campaign_finance_investigation

In 2005, House Leader Delay was indicted on criminal charges stemming from a redistricting incident he was involved with. Bad led to worse and in January 2006 Congressman Delay announced he would not seek re-election to his Congressional Seat. Soon after, he resigned from the House of Representatives. Even though he is still under indictment today, he has not been brought to trial. However, around the time of his announcement, two of his aides were indicted and convicted in the Jack Abramoff Scandal as well; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Abramoff

Mr. Delay has a website and is still active in the Republican Party. He has much to offer with insider expertise, knowledge of politics and the workings within the Beltway. Even though he has stayed out of the public eye since he left office, I believe the Hammer still influences behind the scenes and will be active in the revitalization of the Republican Party.

Bush's Brain

Admire him or loathe him. Karl Rove must be the most well known political figure in politics today. In most cases, he is better known than some elected officials he has worked for. Mr. Rove’s political career goes back as far as 1970, while he was a student at the University of Utah. It is questionable, if even back then, he used dirty tricks in promoting his candidate. But, in 1972, Karl worked for Donald Segretti. This individual, was known as, deceased President Richard Nixon’s Political Strategist. Mr. Segretti earned his reputation of underhandedness and eventually served 6 months jail time for distributing illegal campaign material. It is said Mr. Rove learned and perfected most of his, behind the scenes shenanigans, while in contact with Segretti.

The website; http://www.counterpunch.org/madsen1101.html
Is an article written by Wayne Madsen, published November 1, 2002. This is a very unflattering view of Mr. Rove but, gives an outline of Karl’s career and how he made his way to the position of Senior Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff in the George W. Bush Administration.

The website; http://www.famoustexans.com/karlrove.htm is a shortened but, more flattering synopsis of Mr. Rove’s political career and rise to the Whitehouse. The source for this article was Robert Bryce. A journalist from Austin Texas and author of many books about the Oil Industry, the Bush family and Corporations like Enron.

The title of this article Bush’s Brain, is also the title to a documentary about Karl Rove, his life and his political career. This movie is put together extremely well and takes you into the inner workings of the Bush campaign and how one man was able to design and succeed in promoting his candidate to the highest office in the land.
This website; http://www.bushsbrain.com/ is where you can go for more information.

Now, Karl Rove has agreed to testify, in front of a Senate Panel, about his involvement with the mass termination of U.S. Attorneys during the mid term of former President George W. Bush’s 2nd Administration. This alone will probably keep Mr. Rove in the spotlight for some time to come. I am sure, once the dust has settled; Karl Rove will appear again on some Republican Horizon. Whether it will be another Bush such as Jeb or any other candidate attempting to reach office, Karl Rove is destined to leave his mark for some time to come.

As for me, I follow Karl on twitter, as he does me. I have spoken to him in short bursts but, nothing of significant substance. I receive updates from his website and read many articles he publishes. I really do not have a personal opinion of him. However, regardless of how you might feel about Karl, he will always have the conservative view to share, with an insight of a direction the GOP might take, as it tries to regain the public support it needs, to recapture the political arena. If you are like me and enjoy politics, he is worth the read, aggravating or not.

A Man of His Own

John Murtha is a Congressman from Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. First elected to this office in 1974, Congressman Murtha has had a colorful career of successes with and without controversy. He is very well known for his continual success in obtaining earmarks for his district.
http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/04/23/murtha.airport/
Dubbed “One of the Kings of Pork” by many Taxpayer Watchdog Groups, Congressman Murtha makes no apologies for the amount of revenue he gets for his district and he is very popular among his constituents because of this. He is, however, one of the biggest targets the GOP have, in trying to regain seats in the House of Representatives.

Some of the ammunition the republicans try to use against this savvy politician is his association with the Abscam controversy in the 1980’s. The following is a summation of this incident;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Murtha#cite_note-14
In 1980, during his fourth term as a Congressman, Murtha became embroiled in the Abscam investigation, which targeted dozens of congressmen. The investigation entailed FBI operatives posing as intermediaries for Saudi nationals hoping to bribe their way through the immigration process into the United States. Murtha met with these operatives and was videotaped. He did agree to testify against Frank Thompson (D-NJ) and John Murphy (D-NY), the two Congressmen mentioned as participants in the deal at the same meeting and who were later video taped placing the cash bribes in their trousers. The FBI videotaped Murtha responding to an offer of $50,000, with Murtha saying, "I'm not interested... at this point. [If] we do business for a while, maybe I'll be interested, maybe I won't", right after Murtha had offered to provide names of businesses and banks in his district where money could be invested legally.[5] The U.S. Attorneys Office reasoned that Murtha's intent was to obtain investment in his district. Full length viewing of the tape shows Murtha citing prospective investment opportunities that could return "500 or 1000" miners to work.
For the FBI to exonerate Congressman Murtha from any wrong doing in this affair may have been a big relief to him but, it began a deep frustration with his detractors that continues to this day. Many of the opposition groups, that salivate at the thought of being able to defeat Congressman Murtha, keep a constant tally of what many have estimated is 100 million dollars annually, in earmarks for his district.

In the upcoming midterm election in 2010, the GOP challenger for the 12th District Seat will be Local Businessman and Community Volunteer Tim Burns. Born and raised from this area, Mr. Burns announced his candidacy this past April. His website can be found at;
http://www.timburnsforcongress.com/index.php
Over his career, Congressman Murtha has faced tough challenges in 1982, 1990 and 2002. Even when scandal was knocking at his door, he was able to pull off a victory and continue his career while frustrating his detractors.

If I were a voter from his district, I am not sure I would care how he brought jobs and services to my community, as long as it helped me to provide a good quality of life to my family. Maybe, I would resent his relatives, benefiting from his Congressional position. But, my vote would come down to economics. If Congressman Murtha’s opponent could not offer a more prosperous future and ran on a platform of ethics, I would vote for the money every time. Ethics do not pay the bills. In the end, if Congressman Murtha ended up in prison, then I would say he made his own bed. Maybe this is the wrong reason but, when you are raising a family, if it does not come in the color green with a President on it, then chances are, I will vote for the other guy. Besides, I feel, that is one of the reasons we elect our Government Officials. I want my Congressman or Senator to be looking out for my areas best interest. Sadly enough, short of murder, I really do not care how that individual does it. Hey, I live near Boston. The Big Dig is what kept Boston and the area communities prosperous during the 90’s. Maybe that is wrong of me. But, in the final analysis, would you really think any different?

Quid Pro Quo

Quid pro quo (From the Latin meaning "something for something")[1] indicates a more-or-less equal exchange or substitution of goods or services. English speakers often use the term to mean "a favour for a favour" and the phrases with almost identical meaning include: "what for what," "give and take," "tit for tat", "this for that", and "you scratch my back, and I'll scratch yours".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quid_pro_quo

On December 30, 2008, Former Illinois Governor Rod Blogojevich named a replacement to the vacated seat, belonging to Illinois, in the U.S. Senate. On January 15, 2009, after much Judicial and Political wrangling, Roland Burris was sworn in as the U.S. Senator from the State of Illinois, filling the vacated seat of President Barack Obama. However, on May 27, 2009, the FBI has released an audio tape of a conversation between Mr. Burris and former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich’s brother, in regard to, Mr. Burris accepting the Senate appointment in exchange for political or financial favors. Transcripts of this conversation can be found at;
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-new-burris-full-transcriptmay27,0,6395405.story?page=1transcriptmay27,0,6395405.story?page=1

Is this a surprising development considering we are talking about politics and honesty? To be a crook or, an outright thief, seem synonymous when discussing any individual in today’s political arena. For President Obama, this is just another distraction from his intended agenda. The question that is being considered is; will there be an indictment of Senator Burris or will he be allowed to continue and let the natural course of politics be the final judge? Only time will tell. But, one thing can be said, the general population is getting a first hand look at Chicago Politics. So far, it has been a real sideshow giving the Republican Party something to shoot at. Of course, the GOP has their issues to contend with as well. This is probably a good thing for the present administration.

So, the saga of Senator Burris will unfold for all to see. I am sure it will be a real spectacle. Remember, the colorful former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich, is at the center of all of this. That alone, promises to be entertainment, in itself. I can not wait.

Back to the Future

President Barack Obama has officially nominated Federal Appeals Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor as his pick to replace, the retiring Justice David Souter, for Supreme Court Justice. In his first choice, our new President has not avoided controversy but, appears to have used that Chicago Political savvy, to nominate a person that will be nearly impossible, for the GOP to turn down. There will be challenges to make a good appearance but, Judge Sotomayor has more than enough credentials to fill the position effectively through her term.

In 1991, then Senator Daniel Patrick Monyihan made a recommendation to then President George Herbert Walker Bush, to nominate Attorney Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. President Bush took that suggestion and made his nomination in November of that year. Judge Sotomayor was confirmed by an almost unanimous Senate the following August. In 1997, Senator Monyihan again recommended Judge Sotomayor for an appointment to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. During that year, her nomination was made by then President William Jefferson Clinton. She was confirmed to that position in October of the following year by an overwhelming majority. In 2005, Senate Democrats recommended Judge Sotomayor for Supreme Court Justice. However, then President George Walker Bush, instead nominated Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr., who was later confirmed.

Judge Sotomayor’s minority background is interesting. Her educational credentials are impressive. Her life and the achievements she has made are inspirational, not only too minorities, but to all Americans regardless of nationality or gender. But, there are doubts about her ability to interpret the laws without bias and activism. I have researched many websites to obtain opinions she has made in many of the cases she has presided on. In my opinion, she does appear to slant to the left, much as Judge Souter did, whom she is replacing. I would say about half of her decisions appear to end reversed in higher court rulings. But, what has disturbed me about this judge is the decision she made, in regard to, the case of Ricci V. DeStefano, the New Haven Fire Fighter reverse discrimination lawsuit. I hope this is not a signal from the Obama administration that we are heading back to the 60’s and 70’s when racial tensions were high. We have come a long way since then. Racial intolerance and understanding between all races has reached a point where the younger generation shows all of us how to coexist and appreciate our diversity in today’s society. We do not need an administration that is going to push an agenda that has a need, to get even. This is not wanted nor is it needed. I feel if the agenda of this administration is to do so then, we are going Back to the Future instead of continuing to move forward.

If activism is the goal, I hope she is not confirmed. But, looking at the bi-partisan support she has had in the past, she could be the very reason President Obama selected her. Good Ole Chicago Politics.

Memorial Day

May 25, 2009 is Memorial Day. For most Americans, the Memorial Day Weekend marks the beginning of summer plans. Cookouts, family gatherings, trips to the beach or your favorite summertime vacation spot. But, for many American Families, it is also a time of remembrance. The remembrance of a loved one lost on a distant battle field or in any endeavor, while in uniform of Military Service, for our Country. Arlington National Cemetery is 624 acres that sit across the Potomac River near the Pentagon. Over 300,000 burial plots are maintained there with Military personnel from the United States Services as well as civilians, specifically chosen, because of the sacrifice they made to our nation. The first soldier was buried in May of 1864.
This is a practice that continues to this day. There are additional Burial Grounds in Europe and around the world that are home to our deceased Veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice.

When I decided to write this article I researched the history of Memorial Day and found some interesting facts. The following is from; http://www.usmemorialday.org/backgrnd.html
Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the day, honoring their dead on separate days until after World War I (when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war). It is now celebrated in almost every State on the last Monday in May (passed by Congress with the National Holiday Act of 1971 (P.L. 90 - 363) to ensure a three day weekend for Federal holidays), though several southern states have an additional separate day for honoring the Confederate war dead: January 19 in Texas, April 26 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi; May 10 in South Carolina; and June 3 (Jefferson Davis' birthday) in Louisiana and Tennessee.

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. It appears to have started during the Civil War and there are many different stories circulating claiming fame to the origin of this holiday. From the Southern Women who would place decorations on the Confederate graves to the Northern town of Waterloo New York where they started placing wreaths and crosses over the graves of their war dead. Originally started on a May 5th, eventually the date was moved to the 30th of the month. Today it is still officially May 30th, but is celebrated on the last Monday of the month allowing a three day weekend of celebration and remembrance. After World War I, this date began to honor the fallen of all Wars instead of just the Civil War.

The following are links that I found interesting and worth while if you would like to know more about this Holiday;

Now, when I was a kid, Memorial Day meant a day off from school, a family cookout and participation in the Town’s Memorial Day Parade. I would get up early on that day, have my breakfast and head into town on my bicycle. With two small American Flags, on thin poles attached to the rear wheel of my bike, I would pedal as fast as I could to make sure I was in the center of town in plenty of time to enjoy all the festivities. Inside my saddlebags were my baseball cards and clothespins. The cards were duplicates, or of players I really did not like. We called these cards noise makers. We would place the cards in between the spokes of the bicycle wheels and hold them in place with the clothespins. We would place these cards on the bike wheels when the parade began and we would usually bring up the rear when the parade was ending. Believe me; with about 50 kids riding their bikes, you could hear us a block away. You see, all of the kids who showed up, were allowed in the parade.

My childhood town was Milford Connecticut. The parade would begin from the Milford High School parking lot next to the football field and finish in the Center of Town, on the Town Green. This was about 2 miles. Speeches by politicians would be made, entertainment would take place, arts and crafts exhibits were abound along with food concessions. (Boy, does this bring back memories) You always knew when the parade was coming by hearing the siren from the lead car which was usually the Chief of Police. He was followed by a Fire Truck blaring it’s siren as well. Then you would hear the first Marching Band. For us, it was the Milford High School Marching Band. It was a small group of only 10 to 12 students. A baton twirler, a couple of drums, trumpets with a bass drum and a flute or two. Their uniforms were of the Maroon and White school colors. Quite frankly, the uniforms were the same design as the Salvation Army uniforms. The only thing missing was a gal banging cymbals and a guy pulling an open pot behind them looking for money. Next, Miss Connecticut, if she was available, riding on the back deck of a convertible, waving and smiling to the crowds gathered along the parade route. Then, Miss Milford would come along sitting in her convertible smiling and waving. The Politicians would be next, playing the crowds and shaking the hands of their constituents. The Marching Band to the other High School in town would be next. The Jonathan Law High School Marching Band with their black and gold uniforms, feathers rising high above their uniform hats. They always looked like they were ready to invade Poland. There were about twenty of them with the same instruments as Milford High. Now came the most important part of the Parade. The Veterans of Wars being honored on this day. The Vietnam War Veterans marched first since this war was going on at the time. They never seemed to actually wear uniforms. They would wear Helmets or Berets and dress in torn or dirty or ragged clothes while marching with rifles over their shoulders. Right behind them marched the Korean War Veterans. Their uniforms always looked like they were Battlefield ready, with helmets backpacks and side arms as well as rifles over their shoulders. The World War II Veterans followed in Dress Military uniforms. Looking rather sharp with war medals on their chests and marching to their leader saying “ to the left, to the left, to the left, right, left” The World War I Veterans followed with some riding in convertibles waving to the crowds. Some still marched though, with their rifles over the shoulder. Now came, the real interesting stuff. The Civil War Veterans were next. As a kid I thought they looked real good for their age. (Believe me, as a kid, I wasn’t the brightest light on the tree. Sometimes, my Mother didn’t think I was lit at all.) Both Union Soldiers, in their blue uniforms followed by the Confederate Soldiers in gray. Of course, there was a small tractor, pulling a Civil War cannon behind it as well. Then finally, and your not going to believe this, but the Revolutionary War Veterans were represented. I was always amazed how much George Washington looked like one of my best friend’s father. The Colonials would walk behind General Washington on his horse. Come to think of it, I used to hear my friends mother yell at her husband to get off his high horse. I wonder…. Well, the Colonials in their Blue Uniforms would march with Muskets over their shoulders and waving to the cheering crowd. Of course, the Redcoats were also represented. General Charles Cornwallis, who looked a lot like my Grammar School History Teacher, would ride his horse holding his head high and nodding to the parade faithful as he passed. The Red Coat Troops, marching with their Muskets over their shoulders, would call out their marching chant with a very poor imitation of a British accent. After all the Veterans were accounted for, then the premier marching band would arrive, the pride of Milford.
The Shoreliners Marching Band were sponsored by the Milford Police Department and competed around the world in competition. When they reached the Green, in the Center of town, a 15 minute performance would be provided, that always left everyone awestruck. Behind the Shoreliners were all of the bicycles making their flapping noises from the baseball cards placed in their spokes. Bringing up the rear were Fire engines and ambulances with a Police car the last one. People along the parade route would walk behind the last cruiser and follow it to the green while others went home to their cookouts. I would stay for a while but, I would return home because I knew my father would have the grille in full form.

Now, I know some of you who know me wonder, if I am going to tell a story or two more about my childhood. I will in future articles. For today, I would like all of you to take a moment and say a prayer or, just have a moment of silence, for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice, for the freedoms we celebrate on this Holiday. Think of their families as well, who only have memories, of the loved ones that are no longer here. May you all have a Happy and Safe Memorial Day Weekend.

The Vulcans

The Presidency of George W. Bush has been under scrutiny right from the start of his Administration. Questions to this day, still linger, over his election in 2000 and the need for the predominantly Right Wing Supreme Court, to confirm the election results. Add to this, a Terrorist Attack that, many people felt he and his administration should have known about. This brings us to the biggest question of his Presidency, next to the authorization, of Water Boarding. The evidence presented, to justify and initiate, the War with Iraq.

A Weapon of Mass Destruction (WMD) is defined from the following;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weapons_of_mass_destruction
weapon of mass destruction (WMD) is a weapon that can kill large numbers of humans and/or cause great damage to man-made structures (e.g. buildings), natural structures (e.g. mountains), or the biosphere in general.
The term is often used to cover several weapon types, including
nuclear, biological, chemical (NBC) and radiological weapons. Additional terms used in a military context include atomic, biological, and chemical warfare (ABC) and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) warfare.

The initial act of Military Action was the response to the Terrorist Attack that occurred on September 11, 2001. The removal of the Taliban government in Afghanistan and the pursuit of the terrorist group Al-Qaida, along with their leader Osama Bin-Laden, began on October 7, 2001. As this campaign continued the Bush Administration began laying the groundwork that Saddam Hussein, President of Iraq, was a supporter of Terrorism, the terrorist group Al-Qaida and was in possession of Weapons of Mass Destruction. The Administration began a very elaborate media blitz and campaign to show evidence of Iraq attempting to gain access to Nuclear Weapons. This charge was challenged by many political opponents as well as the general public. The Intelligence Agencies around the world could not agree if Iraq still had WMDs from the previous Gulf War or if they had been destroyed. United Nations Weapons Inspectors claimed no WMDs existed but, the Bush Administration dismissed their claims. As the doubts mounted, the Bush Administration used the Terrorist Attacks to full advantage and on March 20, 2003, launched the initial invasion of Iraq.
Did the Bush Administration know, in advance, of the Attacks of September 11, 2001? Did they fabricate and influence evidence to justify a planned attack on another Sovereign Nation? Let us take a look at what was being discussed behind closed doors long before George W. Bush decided to run for President.

On March 10, 1991, then President George Herbert Walker Bush initiated the removal of all U.S. Troops out of the Persian Gulf Area. This was after the end of the Gulf War was announced. There were some criticisms made that we should have moved on to Baghdad and removed Saddam Hussein from power. President H.W. Bush, along with his National Security Advisor Brent Scowcroft, felt the Coalition that was formed would not have gone along with the idea, as well as, a much higher cost of Human life and Political upheaval.
Then Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney stated;
I would guess if we had gone in there, I would still have forces in Baghdad today. We'd be running the country. We would not have been able to get everybody out and bring everybody home. And the final point that I think needs to be made is this question of casualties. I don't think you could have done all of that without significant additional U.S. casualties, and while everybody was tremendously impressed with the low cost of the (1991) conflict, for the 146 Americans who were killed in action and for their families, it wasn't a cheap war. And the question in my mind is, how many additional American casualties is Saddam (Hussein) worth? And the answer is, not that damned many. So, I think we got it right, both when we decided to expel him from Kuwait, but also when the President made the decision that we'd achieved our objectives and we were not going to go get bogged down in the problems of trying to take over and govern Iraq.[47
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_War#The_end_of_active_hostilities
Gee, if that really is how Dick Cheney felt, then what happened between then and when he became Vice President to George W. Bush?

Under Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz was one of the voices who believed we should have continued into Baghdad. Soon after the First Gulf War, Wolfowitz, along with his then assistant I. Lewis Libby (Scooter), wrote the Wolfowitz Doctrine. This was the unofficial title given to the initial version of the Defense Planning Guidance for the 1994-1999 fiscal years. This document was dated February 18, 1992. Due to some of the controversial policies within this document, it was rewritten under the supervision of Defense Secretary Cheney and released to the public officially on April 16, 1992. Of course, this document was never initiated because President H.W. Bush lost re-election to President William Jefferson Clinton. Strangely enough, the Wolfowitz Doctrine became the template for the Bush Doctrine of President George W. Bush.

In 1997, The Project for the New American Century was formed. It was co founded by neo-conservatives William Kristol and Robert Kagan.
http://www.newamericancentury.org/
The link above will take you to the website where the philosophies of this organization can be reviewed. In January of 1998, PNAC members including Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, and Robert Zoellick placed an open letter, on the organizations website, to President Clinton asking for the removal of Saddam Hussein from power since he was refusing to cooperate with the United Nations Weapons Inspectors. Letters were sent to members of Congress as well as editorials, written by Kristol, appeared in various publications calling for regime change in Iraq. All of this before George W. Bush announced his candidacy for President.

During this time, an unknown was being mentored. Her name is Condoleeza Rice. Dr. Rice was the director for the Soviet and East European Affairs of the National Security Council under Brent Scowcroft. Near the end of 1998, George W. Bush met Dr. Rice at the request of his father H.W. Bush. George W. was impressed enough that he asked her to take charge of the foreign policy, for his recently announced, Presidential Campaign. Soon afterward, Paul Wolfowitz, George P. Schultz and Dick Cheney joined the campaign as well.

When the Foreign Policy Advisory Team was complete, they were nicknamed the Vulcans. This team, being lead by Condoleeza Rice, included Richard Armitage, Robert Blackwill, Stephen Hadley, Richard Perle, Dov S. Zakheim, Robert Zoellick, Paul Wolfowitz along with Dick Cheney, George P. Shultz and Colin Powell. All majority of which are members of PNAC.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Vulcans

When George W. Bush won the election in 2000, all of the members of the Foreign Policy Advisory Team received lucrative positions in his administration. They were as follows;
Condoleeza Rice – U.S National Security Advisor, then U.S. Secretary of State.
Paul Wolfowitz – U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense under Donald Rumsfeld, then President of the World Bank.
Richard Armitage – U.S. Deputy Secretary of State under Colin Powell.
Robert Blackwill – U.S Ambassador to India, then U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor.
Stephen Hadley – U.S Deputy National Security Advisor under Condoleeza Rice, then U.S. National Security Advisor.
Richard Perle – appointed Chairman of the U.S. Defense Policy Board Advisory Committee.
Dov Zakheim – Comptroller of the Pentagon.
Robert Zoellick – U.S. Trade Representative, United States Deputy Secretary of State, then World Bank President in May of 2007.
Now, Presidential appointments to friends and associates are common when a new President is elected. But, the background of these appointees has to make you wonder.

So, if Saddam Hussein associated with Al-Qaida, why did the Bush Administration ignore the briefings and warnings about the Terrorist group, from the outgoing Clinton Administration? Al-Qaida had been implicated in the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993 as well as the bombing of the U.S.S. Cole in Yemen in 2000. These, along with internal intelligence of Middle Eastern Males being trained in flight schools here in the states, should have meant something to the incoming administration, especially Dr. Rice. However, she disregarded this information.

Now, we have not even covered our countries involvement in the Iraq/Iran War (Persian Gulf War) 1980 – 1988. During that time, we favored Saddam Hussein and may have even helped him with his weaponry in some way. Never the less, with the Wolfowitz Doctrine of regime change, (Funny, no mention of terrorism association in it) and the slow banging of the war drum from the PNAC, I believe a war in Iraq was a certainty under the George W. Bush Administration. The September 11, attack was the catalyst used. I am sure that no one has shed a tear about the demise of Saddam Hussein. The world may even be better off without him. But, were the reasons used to go to war legal? Did we really have any legitimate reason for our unprecedented pre-emptive strike on a sovereign nation? I’m sure this will be debated for a very long time in the future. However, I believe a world outcry to find the truth, may stimulate the World Court on International Law to take a good hard look sooner, rather than, later.

You know, I seem to recall a country about 75 years ago, had a leader that used fear to gain prominence. Then he created anger towards a made up enemy. His country used to play their National Anthem all the time on the radio, not just at 12 noon like we do. His Administration had their version of Homeland Security and a means to spread information or disinformation like we used to see. He also had a Doctrine for his Fiscal Years. He called it the Final Solution. Oh yeah, come to think of it, his political beliefs began with the prefix “Neo” as well. Hmm!

That’s how I see it.

Twilights Last Gleaming

Water Boarding is defined as stated on;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterboarding
Waterboarding is a form of torture[1][2] that consists of immobilizing the victim on his or her back with the head inclined downwards, and then pouring water over the face and into the breathing passages. By forced suffocation and inhalation of water, the subject experiences drowning and is caused to believe they are about to die.[3] It is considered a form of torture by legal experts,[4][5] politicians, war veterans,[6][7],medical experts in the treatment of torture victims[8][9] , intelligence officials,[10] military judges,[11] and human rights organizations.[12][13] As early as the Spanish Inquisition it was used for interrogation purposes, to punish and intimidate, and to force confessions.[14]
In contrast to submerging the head face-forward in water, waterboarding precipitates a
gag reflex almost immediately.[15] The technique does not inevitably cause lasting physical damage. It can cause extreme pain, dry drowning, damage to lungs, brain damage from oxygen deprivation, other physical injuries including broken bones due to struggling against restraints, lasting psychological damage or, ultimately, death.[4] Adverse physical consequences can start manifesting months after the event; psychological effects can last for years.[8]

Torture is defined as stated on;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torture
Torture, according to the United Nations Convention Against Torture, is: "any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him, or a third person, information or a confession, punishing him for an act he or a third person has committed or is suspected of having committed, or intimidating or coercing him or a third person, or for any reason based on discrimination of any kind, when such pain or suffering is inflicted by or at the instigation of or with the consent or acquiescence of a public official or other person acting in an official capacity. It does not include pain or suffering arising only from, inherent in, or incidental to, lawful sanctions."[1]

The following is Article 2 from the United Nations Convention Against torture;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Convention_Against_Torture#cite_note-untc-0
Article 2 of the convention prohibits torture, and requires parties to take effective measures to prevent it in any territory under its jurisdiction. This prohibition is absolute and non-derogable. "No exceptional circumstances whatsoever"[5] may be invoked to justify torture, including war, threat of war, internal political instability, public emergency, terrorist acts, violent crime, or any form of armed conflict.[6] Torture cannot be justified as a means to protect public safety or prevent emergencies.[6] Neither can it be justified by orders from superior officers or public officials.[7] The prohibition on torture applies to all territories under a party's effective jurisdiction, and protects all people under its effective control, regardless of citizenship or how that control is exercised.[6] Since the Conventions entry into force, this absolute prohibition has become accepted as a principle of customary international law.[6]
Because it is often difficult to distinguish between cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment and torture, the Committee regards Article 16's prohibition of such treatment as similarly absolute and non-derogable.
[6]
The other articles of part I lay out specific obligations intended to implement this absolute prohibition by preventing, investigating and punishing acts of torture.

The following is a posting by Malcolm Nance October 31, 2007 on the Small Wars Journal;
http://smallwarsjournal.com/blog/2007/10/waterboarding-is-torture-perio/
In fact, waterboarding is just the type of torture then Lt. Commander John McCain had to endure at the hands of the North Vietnamese. As a former Master Instructor and Chief of Training at the US Navy Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape School (SERE) in San Diego, California I know the waterboard personally and intimately. SERE staff were required undergo the waterboard at its fullest. I was no exception. I have personally led, witnessed and supervised waterboarding of hundreds of people. It has been reported that both the Army and Navy SERE school’s interrogation manuals were used to form the interrogation techniques used by the US army and the CIA for its terror suspects. What was not mentioned in most articles was that SERE was designed to show how an evil totalitarian, enemy would use torture at the slightest whim. If this is the case, then waterboarding is unquestionably being used as torture technique.

In the past week, former Vice President Dick Cheney along with his daughter Elizabeth, have hit the airwaves. Ms. Cheney is trying to convince Americans that President Barack Obama is catering to terrorists while Mr. Cheney is doing everything he can to justify the Torture Technique of Water Boarding that he and other high Bush Administration Officials authorized during the previous administration. Mr. Cheney contends that the Water Boarding Technique was reviewed and critiqued to be lawful by the Justice Department under, then Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez.

The Office of Legal Council lawyer John Yoo, assisted by David Addington, Legal Council to then Vice President Dick Cheney, authored the now infamous Bybee Memo. This document was used by the Justice Department as their written opinion on the Water Boarding matter. This document, used for the justification and authorization of Water Boarding, came from Assistant Attorney General Jay S. Bybee dated August 1, 2002.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/documents/cheney/torture_memo_aug2002.pdf
What I fail to understand is how any of these lawyers, by using the case examples they used, come to the conclusion they did authorizing the use of Water Boarding to be legal. I researched the cases they were using in this memo. I realize I am not formally educated in constitutional law but, to me, the cases referred to in this memo is an exaggerated distortion and a deliberate interpretation to manipulate the meaning of torture and the effects of Water Boarding in definition to torture. To read this memo, one can only conclude that either the authors were totally ignorant of Constitutional and International Law or were coerced or persuaded for their future recognition, to provide an avenue to circumvent the legality of the written law. My belief has always been that either factual case example or personal documented knowledge, of the intent of a created law, could be the only basis for interpretation of said law. Neither of these criteria appears to have been met in my opinion.

Condoleeza Rice found herself having to defend her position and those of the previous administration during an appearance at Stanford University;
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/44/2009/04/30/rice_defends_enhanced_interrog.html
"In terms of the enhanced interrogation and so forth, anything that was legal and was going to make this country safer, the president wanted to do," Rice said. "Nothing that was illegal. And nothing that was going to make the country less safe." She also urged the student to remember the context of the decision-making in 2002, shortly after the sept. 11 attacks. "Unless you were there, in a position of responsibility after September 11th, you cannot possibly imagine the dilemmas that you faced in trying to protect Americans," she said, adding "you were determined to do anything that you could that was legal to prevent that from happening again."Rice became riled when the student noted that the United States did not torture during World War II."With all due respect, Nazi Germany never attacked the homeland of the United States," Rice shot back.
Japan, Germany's ally, however, attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, killing 2,350 military personnel and civilians.
The student persists, and says that the United States tortured detainees at Guantanamo Bay."No, no dear, you're wrong," Rice said. "You're wrong. We did not torture anyone. And Guantanamo Bay, by the way, was considered a model quote-'medium security prison' by representatives of the Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe who went there to see it. Did you know that?"
(Alain Grignard, an expert for the OSCE, said in 2006 that Guantanamo was a "model prison" where inmates are treated better than in Belgian jails, though he added that holding people for many years without telling them what would happen to them is a form of "mental torture.")
At one point, Rice puts on her best professorial voice and jabs, "Do your homework first."Rice insisted she did not authorize the CIA to use the interrogation techniques, as was widely reported last week: "I didn't authorize anything. I conveyed the authorization of the administration to the agency that they had policy authorization, subject to the Justice Department's clearance. That's what I did."Asked whether waterboarding is torture, Rice replied emphatically: "We were told, nothing that violates our obligations under the Convention Against Torture. And so, by definition, if it was authorized by the president, it did not violate our obligations under the Conventions Against Torture."
So, are we to presume that once President Bush had the unlawful authorization from the Justice Department, he authorized the use of Water Boarding? Are we to also presume that since the President says it is ok, that means it is lawful? Didn’t, then President Richard Nixon, claim the same point to Talk Show Host David Frost in the 70’s? (See the Movie Frost/Nixon)
The amount of evidence and the people involved could go on and on. However, for the sake of this article we will conclude.

I believe, based on the facts provided here, Water Boarding is a Technique of Torture. Torture is against Domestic and International laws. Our previous Administration knew this. They attempted to write interpretations to circumvent these laws. I believe these writings will not only be found illegal but, criminal. I would expect that every level, in which the use of Water Boarding was conducted, will find themselves within the long arms of the law.

Shepard Smith, of Fox News, made a theatrical performance, while banging his fist on the desk in front of him, a week or so ago on his television show;
http://popwatch.ew.com/popwatch/the_bad_man_scares_me/index.html
"We are America," he reminded them, his voice rising as he prepared to hit those two with an obscenity-laced dose of truth. "I don't give a rat's ass if it helps! WE ARE AMERICA! We do NOT f---ing torture!"
You know what Shep, you’re right. WE DO NOT TORTURE! That is why we need to bring this era to a conclusion. Punish those who violated the laws and ensure no one from this Nation ever does it again.

That’s how I see it.
